Since opening in 1885, The Mikado has spawned a variety of performance styles and reinterpretations. And the melodic "On a Tree by a River" (the Tit-Willow song) is no exception. This mashup, created by company member Todd Douglas, highlights the Tit-Willow song from a wide range of productions around the world, including England, Ireland, Australia, Spain, Belgium and the United States.
Our 1979 production of The Mikado starred Neil Smith as Ko-Ko. General Manager Brian S. Goodman recalls Neil as a gifted comic patter man and one of the best performers in Young Vic's history.
Sadly Neil left us over 30 years ago (and far too young). Since then, we honor him each season by awarding our highest accolade to an outstanding member of the company: The Neil Smith Sorcerer Cup for Spirit and Dedication to YVT.
