The role of the Duke of Plaza-Toro marks Steve Goodman’s 13th appearance with the Young Vic Theatre over a 21 year span. With Young Vic he has performed virtually the entire canon of G&S of comic baritone leads, including the three characters in The Mikado (Koko, Pooh-Bah, and Mikado). The Sun has described his performances as "hilarious", "perfectly pompous" and "reminiscent of Cyril Ritchard," presumably when alive. The Duke, which he played in 1989, is the first role he has reprised.
He has appeared in many other Baltimore and regional venues, with numerous roles in productions of Opera Vivente, Baltimore Opera, and the Annapolis Opera. His many oratorio solo performances include Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, requiems by Mozart, Brahms, Faure and Verdi, Carmina Burana, Messiah and masses of masses. In pre-Idol days, he was chosen by Marvin Hamlisch as a token adult finalist in the BSO’s "Search for a Star" competition, won by an 11 year-old (who recently debuted at Carnegie Hall). He has twice sung the national anthem for the Orioles, once with the right words, and once with the wrong ones. He supports his singing with a day job as a professor on the faculties of the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Public Health.
