
Hailing from Philadelphia, PA, Tenor Nicholas Houhoulis (MARCO)
is fast becoming regarded as an excellent interpreter of operatic character
repertoire. Mr. Houhoulis is excited to be making his Young Victorian Theatre
debut this summer. This past season he participated in the choruses of both the
Washington National Opera (La Bohéme, Der Fliegende Holländer) and the
Baltimore Opera Company (Maria Stuarda, Madama Butterfly).
In the 2006-2007 season, he was seen as Number 5 in the Maryland Opera Studio
production of Conrad Susa’s Transformations and as Schmidt in Werther. 2006 saw
Nicholas’ professional operatic debut as Tybalt in Cleveland Opera’s production
of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette. Previous MOS appearances include Rodolfo in La
Bohéme, The Prologue/Peter Quint in The Turn of the Screw, and
Cochenille/Pitichinaccio in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, and the Duke of Mantua in
scenes from Rigoletto. In 2004, Nicholas created the roles of Ludwig Schumann
in the world premier of Clara, and Eun-Jae in the workshop premier of Ssibaji.
With Westminster Opera Theater (Princeton, NJ), he appeared as Kaspar in Amahl
and the Night Visitors and as Brack Weaver in Down in the Valley.
For 3 seasons, he was featured as a member of the Westminster Choir with
Spoleto Festival USA, where he performed under the direction of Christopher
Alden, Jonathan Eaton, and Chen Shi-Zeng and the batons of Julius Rudel, Yves
Abel, and Emmanuel Villaume. Past productions with Spoleto USA include Dido and Aeneas, Manon Lescaut, Iphigénie en Tauride, Luisa Miller, Il Tabarro,and the U.S. Premier of Kurt Weill’s Die Bürgschaft.
Nicholas has been a guest soloist with the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra of New Jersey, and the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro James Ross. In November of 2005, Nicholas was also featured in recital to a national and Canadian audience live on XM Satellite Radio. He has studied voice with both Elem Eley and Dominic Cossa, and has coached with Dalton Baldwin, J.J. Penna, José Melendez, Miah Im, Jeffrey Watson, and the late Charles Reiker. Currently, Mr. Houhoulis studies with world renowned performer and teacher Gran Wilson, and resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
