
Tenor Nicholas Houhoulis (LORD TOLLOLLER) is pleased to
return to Young Victorian Theatre, having previously appeared as Fredric in The
Pirates of Penzance (2009) and Marco in The Gondoliers (2008) Of his
role as Fredric, Mr. Houhoulis was praised as "[singing] with admirable
technical poise and sensitivity of phrase." (Tim Smith, Baltimore Sun)
The 2009-2010 season saw Mr. Houhoulis in engagements with the Washington National Opera (Ein Offizier in Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Barbiere di Seviglia), Maryland Opera Studio (Belfiore in La finta giardiniera), Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (Holiday Spectacular! 2009), Opera AACC (Alfred in Die Fledermaus), New Jersey Opera (Carmen), Baltimore Concert Opera (Cavalleria Rusticana/I Pagliacci), a recital with the St. Cecelia Society at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, and his debut with The Metropolitan Opera (The Flying Dutchman).
Previous roles – Maryland Opera Studio: Tom Snout (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Number 5 (Transformations), Coryphee (Armide), Schmidt (Werther), Rodolfo (La Bohéme) Prologue/Peter Quint (The Turn of the Screw), Cochenille/Pitichinaccio (Les Contes d’Hoffmann), Ludwig Schumann (Clara – World Premier). Wolf Trap Opera Company: Padre Ruffiano (An Inspector from Rome – Reading). Cleveland Opera: Tybalt (Romeo et Juliette). Westminster Opera Theater (Princeton, NJ): Kaspar (Amahl and the Night Visitors), Brack Weaver (Down in the Valley).
For 3 seasons, he was featured as a member of the Westminster Choir with Spoleto Festival USA, where he performed under the direction of Christopher Alden, Jonathan Eaton, and Chen Shi-Zeng and the batons of Julius Rudel, Yves Abel, and Emmanuel Villaume. Past productions with Spoleto USA include Dido and Aeneas, Manon Lescaut, Iphigénie en Tauride, Luisa Miller, Il Tabarro, and the U.S. Premier of Kurt Weill’s Die Bürgschaft.
Nicholas has been a guest soloist with the Pennsylvania Sinfonia Orchestra, Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra of New Jersey, and the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Maestro James Ross. In November of 2005, Nicholas was also featured in recital to a national and Canadian audience live on XM Satellite Radio. He has studied voice with Elem Eley, Dominic Cossa, and Gran Wilson, and has coached with Dalton Baldwin, J.J. Penna, José Melendez, Miah Im, Jeffrey Watson, Justina Lee, James Harp, and the late Charles Reiker.
